Austin won’t play until cleared

North Carolina Tar Heels defensive tackle Marvin Austin will not play for the team until he is cleared of any wrongdoing by the NCAA.

Austin is under investigation for his contact with an agent and some of his travels around the country.

The defensive lineman is continuing to practice with the Tar Heels, but the team doesn’t want to risk forfeiting games that he plays in should the NCAA find he has done something wrong.

That’s a big hit for the Tar Heels and their stout defense, as Austin is projected to be a first-round pick in the NFL Draft. ( Read More…)

Tar Heels picked fourth in ACC Coastal

By Bud L. Ellis

The University of North Carolina Tar Heels feature a defense that’s the envy of most teams in college football.

That defense is a big reason why some people think UNC can be a factor in the race for the Atlantic Coast Conference championship in 2010. ( Read More…)

Quintet of Heels lands on preseason ACC squad

By Bud L. Ellis

Big things are expected from the North Carolina Tar Heels defense in 2010, and the voting for the Atlantic Coast Conference preseason team reflects those lofty thoughts.

Five UNC players, all on defense, landed on the team, the most of any one school. Earning the honors for the Tar Heels are defensive end Robert Quinn, defensive tackle Marvin Austin, linebacker Quan Sturdivant, cornerback Kendric Burney and safety Deunta Williams. ( Read More…)

Former North Carolina Tar Heels legendary basketball coach Dean Smith is suffering from memory loss.

Smith’s family has been busy writing letters to get in touch with former players and share the news.

The family has said little to the media about Smith’s healthy, citing their rights to privacy.

Smith hasn’t coached in well over a decade but has remained close with the Tar Heel community. ( Read More…)

Tar Heels due for a return to prominence next season?

ESPN.com’s Andy Katz is sold on the North Carolina Tar Heels’ talent in 2o10-2011, evidenced by his ranking the team No. 11 in his Preseason Top 25.

UNC loses four five players from last year’s disappointing team: Ed Davis (who was a lottery pick in the NBA Draft), graduates Deon Thompson and Marcus Ginyard, and the Wear twins, who departed for UCLA. But the arrival of top prospect Harrison Barnes, along with the return of point guard Larry Drew II and forward John Henson ensure that there’s no lack of talent for Roy Williams to work with. Tar Heels close out dismal season with predictable result

North Carolina’s forgettable season is over. The ending was similarly forgettable.

After a run to the NIT title game, the Tar Heels’ inconsistent play and lack of defensive prowess reared their ugly heads again in a 79-68 loss to the Dayton Flyers.

Will Graves was one of the few bright spots for UNC, scoring 25 points on the strength of seven 3-pointers. But the Tar Heels turned the ball over 15 times, and outside of Graves, struggled from beyond the arc and at the free throw line, where they shot 8 of 15.

Still, the fact that this team made a run in the NIT at all is a positive, as it could have easily packed it in after such a disappointing season. And with one of the nation’s best recruiting classes coming in, as well as a likely expansion of the NCAA Tournament, don’t expect UNC to be down for long.
