Tar Heels survive Washington, move into Sweet 16

By Bud L. Ellis

The North Carolina Tar Heels had to exert all the energy they could muster on Sunday to keep their NCAA tournament dreams alive.

Tyler Zeller and Harrison Barnes provided the offense, and the Tar Heels got the defensive stops they needed in the final seconds of an 86-83 victory over Washington in the third round of the East regional in Charlotte, N.C. ( Read More…)

UNC returns to NCAA big stage with 102-point performance

By Bud L. Ellis

The last time the North Carolina Tar Heels played in the NCAA tournament, they were celebrating winning the 2009 national championship.

The Tar Heels returned to the Big Dance on Friday night, and led by a trio of powerful offensive performances North Carolina had just enough in the second round, downing scrappy Long Island University 102-87 in the East regional in Charlotte.

Tyler Zeller scored a team-high 32 points for the Tar Heels. John Henson added 28 points (along with six blocked shots), and Harrison Barnes scored 24 points with 16 rebounds. Henson and Zeller set career highs in scoring in the victory, the 103rd all-time NCAA tournament victory for North Carolina.

That victory ties Kentucky for the most ever. North Carolina goes for the record, and more importantly a trip to the Sweet 16, on Sunday against Washington.

The Tar Heels held the Blackbirds to just 36.5 percent shooting, but North Carolina only hit 3 of 17 3-point attempts.

Tar Heels make remarkable run from slow start to second seed

By Bud L. Ellis

From the end of November to the middle of March, one could make the argument nobody has been hotter in the nation than the North Carolina Tar Heels.

At the end of November, the Tar Heels were 4-3 on the season after a 12-point loss to Illinois. So, how does a team come that point to now, sitting as the No. 2 seed in the East regional of the NCAA tournament? ( Read More…)

North Carolina routed by Duke, 75-58

The North Carolina Tar Heels couldn’t make it three comebacks in a row in a 75-58 loss to the Duke Blue Devils.

The Tar Heels started slowly the previous two games but still managed to storm back for the win, but Duke is a different animal.

North Carolina seemed to struggle with Duke’s change in defensive philosophy from their last meeting.

The Blue Devils seemed more willing to sit back on defense and give North Carolina open jump shots. ( Read More…)

Tar Heels red hot heading into March

By Bud L. Ellis

They started the season ranked in the top 10, dropped all the way out of the rankings and now, North Carolina is positioned for another magical March run.

It’s been an uncharacteristic up-and-down journey for the perennial Atlantic Coast Conference powerhouse. The Tar Heels were 4-3 after a 12-point loss Nov. 30 at then No. 21 Illinois. Two losses to Minnesota and Vanderbilt had occurred right before Thanksgiving. ( Read More…)

North Carolina cruises past Wake Forest, 78-64

The North Carolina Tar Heels weren’t their sharpest but still cruised past the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, 78-64.

North Carolina shot poorly from the field and lacked intensity in front of a quiet Dean Dome crowd.

The Tar Heels still managed to build a 13-point lead by halftime and were never threatened by the Demon Deacons.

Tyler Zeller lead the way with 18 points while John Henson had another double-double, scoring 14 and grabbing 13 rebounds. ( Read More…)

North Carolina fades against Duke, 79-73

The North Carolina Tar Heels couldn’t maintain their large, first-half lead in a 79-73 loss to the Duke Blue Devils.

North Carolina built a 16-point first-half lead thanks to their quickness on both ends of the court and carried a 14-point advantage into the locker room.

Drew leaves Tar Heels

Point guard Larry Drew II has announced that he is leaving the North Carolina Tar Heels basketball program.

The point guard position and Drew’s play have both been under a lot of scrutiny over the past two seasons.

The timing is interesting given that Drew was playing some of the best basketball of his collegiate career.

He dished out nine assists in just 19 minutes of play in the team’s big road win over Boston College. ( Read More…)

Austin won’t play until cleared

North Carolina Tar Heels defensive tackle Marvin Austin will not play for the team until he is cleared of any wrongdoing by the NCAA.

Austin is under investigation for his contact with an agent and some of his travels around the country.

The defensive lineman is continuing to practice with the Tar Heels, but the team doesn’t want to risk forfeiting games that he plays in should the NCAA find he has done something wrong.

That’s a big hit for the Tar Heels and their stout defense, as Austin is projected to be a first-round pick in the NFL Draft. ( Read More…)
